WHAT IS AN APOSTILLE?
Apostilles authenticate the seals and signatures of officials (i.e Notary Public) on public documents such as birth certificates, court orders, or any other document issued by a public authority so that they can be recognized in foreign countries that are members of the 1961 Hague Convention Treaty. As for the nations not party to the Hague Convention Treaty, documents being sent to these countries would require a Certificate of Authentication. in place of an Apostille.
WHO APOSTILLES & WHAT TYPES OF DOCUMENT?
The Office of the Secretary of State provides apostille and authentication service to U.S. citizens and foreign nationals on documents that will be used overseas. Types of documents include corporate documents such as company bylaws and articles of incorporation, power of attorney, diplomas, transcripts, letters relating to degrees, marital status, references and job certifications, home studies, deeds of assignments, distributorship agreements, papers for adoption purposes, etc. The U.S. State Department provides general information about document authentications and apostilles under the Hague Convention of October 5, 1961.
APOSTILLE EXPIRATION
Apostilles usually do not expire. Notwithstanding this notion, certain factors can contribute to making a document initially apostilled become unacceptable. A perfect example would be a situation where you get an Apostille on a document to be used in a country that is a party/signatory to the Hague convention, but later decide to also use the same document in another country that is not a party to the Hague convention. You more than likely would be required to have the document reprocessed. Another example would be applying for a Work permit in The Peoples Republic of China and you intend to submit an Apostilled document as part of your application package.
